Kanye West Sports a Burzum Shirt in Recent Photo

A recent online photo is making waves, capturing the artist formerly known as Kanye West donning a t-shirt from the controversial Norwegian black metal band BURZUM.

Today, American rapper, singer, and record producer JPEGMafia took to his social media to share a picture of himself hanging out with West, who is seen sporting the BURZUM merchandise. This comes just days after JPEGMafia publicly questioned why Ye seemed to be overlooking his studio talents in favor of artists "who have less to offer u than me." JPEGMafia even referred to himself as "a scientist in the lab, a surgeon."

BURZUM, founded by Kristian "Varg" Vikernes (Count Grishnackh), has a dark history. Vikernes was convicted in 1994 and sentenced to Norway's longest prison term of 21 years for the August 1993 murder of MAYHEM guitarist Oystein Aarseth (Euronymous) and for burning down three churches, including the original Holmenkollen Chapel in Oslo. He was released in 2009 after serving 16 times.

In 2016, Kanye was featured in a rap song by Gucci Mane titled "Pussy Print," which sampled BURZUM's 1996 track "Rundgang Um Die Transzendentale Säule Der Singularität."

Notably, media outlets observed that the design and typography for West's upcoming LP, "Vultures," resemble album covers by BURZUM.

Vikernes, after his release, continued expressing extreme views on his website, advocating for "civil war, race war, and a return to extreme nationalism" as the "only solution." He controversially added that "nothing other than a new Ice Age can stop immigration from Asia and Africa."

West, in recent years, faced criticism for antisemitic remarks, earning him the "antisemite of the year" label from the watchdog group StopAntisemitism in 2022. Following these comments, several sponsors distanced themselves from the rapper, terminating their contracts with him.
